Making South Yorkshire Safer

South Yorkshire statistics

  • In 2009, 530 people were killed or seriously injured on South Yorkshire roads, the lowest figure since records began in 1979.
  • There were 5,437 casualties in collisions on roads in South Yorkshire in 2009.
  • There were 109 powered two-wheel motor vehicle users (i.e. motorbike/ moped users) killed or seriously injured in South Yorkshire during 2009.
  • For the first year on record, no children were killed on South Yorkshire's roads in 2009.
  • There were 662 pedestrian casualties in South Yorkshire during 2009.
  • There were no pedal cyclist fatalities in South Yorkshire during 2009 but 53 were seriously injured.

South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership aims to reduce this terrible and unnecessary toll by cutting the number of motorists exceeding the speed limits on our roads and running red lights.

Although we do have the power to fine those who break the speed limit, we would rather persuade drivers to slow down – before they are caught on film.

General road safety statistics

  •  Speeding is a contributory factor in at least 26% of collisions that result in fatalities.
  • The South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership is one of over 40 partnerships across the UK. There are now 150 static, mobile and red light cameras in the county.
  • The four-year evaluation report of the National Safety Camera Programme showed that the benefits to society from the avoided injuries amounted to £258 million.
  • National research has shown that speeding is common with 50% of all drivers admitting to exceeding the 30mph limit in urban areas.
  • Every 1mph reduction in average speed reduces the number of collisions by 5%.
  • An average family car travelling at 35mph will need an extra 21 feet (6.4 metres) to stop than one travelling at 30mph.
  • Every year inappropriate speed kills or injures over 100,000 people... Know your limits.

For the latest road collision figures take a look at 'Reported Road Casualties Great Britain Main Results 2009' published by the Department for Transport, it's available online by clicking here.
