Motorcyclists encouraged to ‘Ride for Life’ at activity day

Sep 30 2010

Statistics show that motorbikes are just 1% of total road traffic, but account for 19% of all Great Britain's road user deaths.

In an effort to reduce the number of motorcyclists killed and injured on the county’s roads, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership has developed a motorcycle safety scheme called ‘Riding for Life’ and its first activity day is taking place on Monday 4th October.

The Riding for Life activity day takes place at Doncaster College, The Hub on the 4th October. It starts at 9am and is expected to attract over 1,500 people.

Focusing on motorcycle awareness and collision prevention, the event will have a range of activities including CBT taster runs, an interactive driving simulator, beer goggles and a free prize draw with some fantastic prizes.

Exhibitors on the day will include:

  • South Yorkshire Police Motorcycle Wing
  • South Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service
  • South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service
  • Bernie Macey’s and A1 motorcycle training
  • J and S motorcycles
  • J and S clothing range
  • Moto Grafix motorcycles
  • Team Roberts motorcycles

Emma Metcalfe, Motorcycle Education Officer for South Yorkshire said, ”The Riding For Life scheme has been developed to promote motorcycle awareness and collision prevention through the use of education across South Yorkshire. I’m a biker myself and wish that something like this had been available to me when I was first learning to ride.

“I’m really looking forward to a good event on Monday, with lots of great exhibitors coming along this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who rides, or is thinking about learning to ride a motorbike”.

Future Riding for Life events are being run in schools and colleges across South Yorkshire during the academic year to students aged between 14 and 19 years old. To date, over a dozen schools and colleges are taking part this year.

If you’re a biker and want to find out more about staying safe on the roads, why not come along to the Riding for Life activity day on 4th October.
