Week long campaign records over 430 motorists and passengers not wearing their seatbelt

Mar 03 2009

As part of a week long seatbelt awareness campaign urging motorists and passengers to belt up on every journey, South Yorkshire Police recorded over 430 motorists and passengers not wearing seatbelts - equivalent to over 60 people per day.

The European-wide TISPOL (Traffic Information System Police) seatbelt initiative ran from 16 to 22 February and involved police forces from across the whole of Europe focusing on the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

In 2007, of the 1,432 car occupants killed in the UK, research indicates that 34% were not wearing a seat belt. Nearly 300 lives would almost certainly have been saved in 2007 if all car occupants had been wearing a belt: roughly one life a day.

Chief Inspector Andy Male, Head of Roads Policing for South Yorkshire said:

"A collision in which everyone is wearing a seatbelt might result in whiplash injuries and a bruised collar bone. But without a seatbelt you are looking at serious life-changing injuries or death.

"If you are travelling in the front of the car without wearing your seatbelt you risk being thrown through the windscreen in a collision. Passengers in the rear seats can be thrown forward and injure, or kill, those in the front seats.

"People may think they have time to react when they are in a collision, but the reality is that it takes less than a second to travel forward and hit the windscreen.

"We’re carrying out this work in the interests of public safety and South Yorkshire Police will continue to warn motorists and their passengers about the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt“.
