South Yorkshire Police Launches Drink and Drug Driving Campaign

Jun 01 2009

South Yorkshire Police has today launched its summer drink and drug driving enforcement campaign. The month-long campaign will highlight the dangers of drink/drug driving and the consequences of ignoring their advice.

The South Yorkshire Police enforcement forms part of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) drive across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the European-wide TISPOL initiative.

During last years summer drink drive enforcement, Officers arrested 133 motorists for drink driving offences in South Yorkshire. 22 drivers out of the 133 (almost 7%) were prosecuted after they were involved in collisions.

This year Police enforcement in South Yorkshire will target drivers at all times of the day, focusing particularly on those driving in the evening and first thing in the morning. Police work will include educating people about the dangers of drink and drug driving as well as the high profile breathalyser testing.

Andy Male, Chief Inspector for Roads Policing said:

“In spite of good progress in recent years, drinking and driving kills people and is a factor in road traffic collisions.

I would be happy if over the summer period we had no drink or drug related serious or fatal traffic collisions and no positive breath tests.

Unfortunately peoples lives will be ruined by being involved in a road traffic collision caused by a drink driver, a number of drivers will ignore our advice and be breathalysed resulting in them losing their livelihoods.”

This high profile campaign will run throughout the month of June but the Force operates an all year round drink and drug drive policy.
