Young Drivers Warned of Reckless Driving Consequences

Feb 12 2009

Firefighters will recreate the scene of a serious car crash this weekend to highlight the dangers of reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt.

Four events will take place on Saturday (14 February) in Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield where fire crews will perform an extrication – cutting casualties from the wreckage of a crashed car.

Paramedics will also be at the scene to treat the ‘casualties’ – who will be played by local students.

The ‘Cut It Out’ events form part of the South Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership’s ‘Kill Your Speed, Not Your Girlfriend’ campaign - aimed at motorists and passengers in the 17-24 year-old age group.

Shayne Tottie, from SYFR’s Community Safety Team, said: “We will make the scenes as true to life as possible – even using make-up artists on the casualties – so those watching will get an accurate picture of the horrific scenes we are called to. We hope it will have an impact on those watching, and they will understand what the consequences of reckless driving can be.”

In South Yorkshire, from 2000 to 2008 the 17-24 year-old age group accounted for 32% of all people killed or seriously injured on the region’s roads.

Steve Betts, Communications Manager for the South Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership said: "There is a disproportionate number of young drivers being killed and seriously injured on the roads of South Yorkshire. The whole campaign, which includes a range of advertising as well as these events, is aimed at making drivers think about the impact being in a crash can have on their passengers.

The campaign also aims to encourage passengers to speak and up and tell their drivers to slow down. Quite often passengers feel uncomfortable in telling their drivers to alter the way they drive but in some instances the consequences of not doing so can be fatal."

The timetable for the extrication events is:

  • Sheffield: Sainsbury’s, Moor @ 11am
  • Barnsley: Peel Square @ 11am
  • Rotherham: All Saints Square @ 2pm
  • Doncaster: Clock Corner/Frenchgate @ 2pm
