Road Safety Message Broadcast Straight to Mobiles

Dec 03 2008

A new tool has been unveiled in the challenge to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on the county’s roads.

A new hi-tech gadget will broadcast the drink drive road safety message to hundreds of mobile phone users in a bid to raise awareness and reduce collisions.

The South Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership unveiled the new Bluetooth device, which will beam safety messages to phones that have the Bluetooth facility activated across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield throughout December.

The project is being launched as part of the national drink drive campaign which started this week.

Steve Betts, Communications Manager for the South Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, said:

“This equipment is a great way to target specific audiences such as younger drivers who are statistically more likely to drink drive”.

“The message is transmitted to all Bluetooth enabled phones within a set distance and asks them if they want to receive the message. If they accept the message is sent straight to their mobile phone”.

“The message will be broadcast from equipment within a police vehicle so as well as the Bluetooth message the police presence will also help to promote road safety”.

It is hoped that the equipment will be used for other campaigns in the future.
