Motorists Failing To Slow Down On Bawtry Road
South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership is asking all motorists to abide by the restricted 30mph speed limit on Bawtry Road in Doncaster while Phase 1 of Doncaster’s A638 Quality Bus Corridor takes place.
At the request of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, the partnership has been asked to enforce the temporary speed limit on one of Doncaster’s busiest roads – one with a history of serious road traffic collisions. The restriction will remain for the duration of the roadworks.
Despite a well signed temporary 30mph speed limit, during the first three-hour session of speed enforcement, over 100 vehicles were caught exceeding the limit and breaking the law.
Simon Davies, operations manager at the partnership, was shocked by the number of motorists failing to observe the speed limit stating enforcement was necessary to protect the workforce and road users.
“The level of offences is quite staggering. To put it into context, it’s more than we would see in a full week of enforcement using the SPECS system at the M1 roadworks between junctions 31 and 32 which started earlier this year,” he said.
Mr Davies continued: “The roadworks and associated temporary 30mph speed limit have been widely publicised, there are numerous warning signs erected and our enforcement vehicles are highly conspicuous. Put bluntly, there’s just no excuse for motorists breaking the law and putting people’s lives in danger.
“The roadworks mean narrow lanes are in place and as the work is taking place in close proximity to the fast moving traffic, construction workers are at risk. The temporary limit is to encourage motorists to take extra care when driving through the restricted area on Bawtry Road. We are asking all motorists to be patient and reduce their speeds. We want the roadworkers to carry out their work without fear of injury and all road users to arrive at their destination safely,” he concluded.
